SAP's Mobility Vision - Any Way You Want It

When you first look at the list of mobility vendors that are attending SAPPHIRENOW 2012, it may seem like most of them compete with SAP mobility, but that would be to forget that SAP sells ERP software. Look at where SAP makes their money. They make their money selling and maintaining large enterprise software implementations that run companies. Mobility is an enabler. Mobility extends and adds value to these large SAP users. Those are important points to understand.

In a way, I think SAP's mobile strategy can be defined as, "I don't care." I don't care what mobile software you use as long as it adds users and value. If more users can access SAP through a third-party mobile solution, and SAP receives more user fees, then all is well. Yes, they have spent billions of dollars on mobile middleware, tools, infrastructure and mobile applications (e.g. Sybase and Syclo), but that was, I believe, to ignite a now explosive enterprise mobility marketplace. They needed to kick-start the market and they have succeeded. There are now many mobility vendors supporting SAP users.

Mobile Expert Interview Series: Sencha's Michael Mullany

Sencha is one of the three new partnerships SAP announced in April around HTML5. Here is a quote from SAP, "By collaborating with Adobe, Appcelerator and Sencha, SAP will enable millions of developers to effectively build mobile apps based on their choice of client architectures - from native to hybrid Web containers to mobile Web. Developers will be able to do so while leveraging an industry-leading enterprise mobile application platform from SAP."

Sencha targets the enterprise market and is very excited to be a partner of SAP. Sencha is doing a lot of things right. They already have over 1 million downloads of their HTML5 tools, and have 350,000 members in their forum.

I believe SAP is very smart with these partnerships. There is no way that SAP can keep up with the demand for mobile applications, so they partner with HTML5 tool vendors and ask the industry to standardize on their mobile platforms. The end users can now choose their own development environment as long as it supports SAP's mobility platform. The burden for supporting the demands of developers will then mostly fall on the shoulders of these HTML5 tool and framework vendors.

At the same time as SAP announced the partnerships with HTML5 vendors, they also announced the acquisition of Syclo. Syclo has many great mobile application development tools, but does not currently have HTML5 support, so these partnerships will also serve to provide an alternative development environment for companies wanting to standardize on HTML5 when possible.

SAP also has a partnership with ClickSoftware which has an HTML5 development environment in their ClickMobile Professional solution.

I asked Sencha's CEO Michael Mullany for his prediction on what percentage of enterprise mobility apps will be based on HTML5 by 2014. He answered, "50% will be HTML5, 20% native and 30% will be hybrid HTML5 apps. I read that as 80% of enterprise mobility applications will be using some form of HTML5 by 2014. Wow!

For integrations with SAP, Sencha is connecting via NetWeaver Gateway.
Responsive Web Design Made Possible by HTML5 and CSS3

I am in Scotland this week conducting workshops on mobile strategies. I met with a large company with multiple enterprise mobility projects to connect back office ERPs and HR apps to mobile applications. They have already determined they will be using HTML5 as their preferred mobile app development environment. They already have experienced web developers so extending the skills of these developers into mobility makes perfect sense to them.

SAP's Acquisition of Sybase in 2010 Revisited

I was a long time partner of Sybase and valued their mobile middleware, which I embedded in my mobile business apps for years. The cautions I shared in 2010, were that Sybase did not have a library of mobile apps or a robust SDK at that time, and businesses still needed to figure out how to get mobile apps.

Cross-Platform Mobile Game Development – a Tool Comparison

Mobile game development has a world of its own. You will come across different set of programming languages which you would not have encountered elsewhere – Lua, Live Code, Unreal Script, Boo etc. Some of these tools are a derivative or an extension of what is available on other gaming platform while others have been explicitly developed for mobile. At least one of these platform may seize to become a game development platform and become an enterprise cross-platform mobile application development solution.

Be Your Own Enterprise Mobile Apps Powerhouse with HTML5

ReadWriteWeb published SAP Plans to Dominate Enterprise Mobile Apps with HTML5 and New Partnerships article a few days ago. SAP acquired a mobile development firm Syclo and also announced important partnerships with Appcelertaor, Adobe (PhoneGap) and Sencha to become “…most powerful enterprise mobile developers in the world”.
Most enterprise or business apps are content or data-driven. More and more enterprise expose their data, content and resources via REST API services and these apps consume that data. This is the next evolution of client/server architecture or more precise, the new mobile-cloud shift. Basicially, you got a mobile app talking connected to cloud-based REST API resources. HTML5 or hybrid (PhoneGap) mobile apps are the perfect fit here.

IBM to Acquire Mobility Vendor Worklight - An Analysis

IBM has jumped into the MEAP (mobile enterprise application
platform) competition with yesterday’s announced intent to acquire MEAP vendor
Worklight. Worklight is headquartered
in New York and was founded in 2006 by CEO Shahar
Kaminitz. Worklight's software supports
HTML5, hybrid and native applications for smartphones and tablets with
industry-standard technologies and tools.
Their solutions include an Eclipse-based software IDE (integrated development
environment), mobile middleware, mobile solution management and analytics.

Worklight Studio competes with Appcelerator, Verivo (formerly Pyxis Mobile), Sybase
Unwired Platform (SAP), Antenna, Syclo, ClickSoftware, Kony Solutions, Rhomobile (Motorola), Webalo and
other mobility vendors that are experiencing rapid growth.

The deal size was not disclosed by IBM or Worklight, but the
Israeli website Globes (www.globes.co.il) reported the acquisition to be $50-60 million. Worklight raised $21 million
in investment capital, from investors Genesis Partners, Pitango Venture
Capital, Index Ventures, and Shlomo Kramer. Globe also estimated 2011
revenues for Worklight at between $5-10 million
(http://www.globes.co.il/serveen/globes/docview.asp?did=1000720723).

My analysis is that all ERP vendors need a standardized
approach for supporting mobility.
Mobility, and MEAPs in particular, are far too strategic to leave up to partner ecosystems to deliver. SAP
acquired Sybase, IBM will acquire Worklight, and we are all awaiting Oracle’s
expected 2012 move to acquire a MEAP vendor.

Interesting note, I cannot think of many situations where an ERP vendor bought a mobile apps company. I am told that SAP's proposed acquisition of SuccessFactor will involve some mobile apps, but have yet to see them. ERP vendors seem to want to buy the middleware, so they can standardize integration, syncing, security and management, and leave most apps to their partner ecosystem.

In a recent IBM study of more than 3,000 global CIOs, 75
percent of respondents identified mobility solutions as one of their top
spending priorities. Nearly all of the
global analyst and research firms are also reporting enterprise mobility to be
a top three priority. In the Enterprise Mobility Survey 2011 that I conducted in September of 2011, 80% of survey respondents said enterprise mobility was "very important" to "critical" to their company's future success.

IBM officials said
with this acquisition, IBM's mobile offerings will span mobile application
development, integration, security and management. Dow Jones Newswire reported on an internal memo
from IBM’s senior vice president in charge of middleware software, Robert
LeBlanc that highlighted their ambitions, “"Now is the time to make IBM essential in the era of
mobile computing."

I had the privilege of interviewing Worklight’s COO Kurt
Daniel about 15 months ago and published the
interview on this site. Here are some
excerpts that you may find interesting given this week's news.

Worklight has developed a MEAP (mobile enterprise
application platform) and a mobile SDK (software development kit), not for
their own use, but rather for systems integrators and end customers to use to
develop their own enterprise mobility solutions. They want to be a technology company, not a
mobile application company.

Kevin: What are your areas of responsibilities at WorkLight?

Kurt: I look after
our worldwide business channels, partnerships, sales and marketing.

Kevin: Tell me about
your solutions.

Kurt: We have the
WorkLight Studio, WorkLight Server and WorkLight console. ISVs and OEM partners use these solutions to
build their own packaged mobility applications.

Kevin: How do you
avoid competing with your partners in the mobility market?

Kurt: We don't sell
applications. We are not experts on ERPS
or other backend systems. We focus on
developing the best mobile technology possible, not services or mobile
applications.

Kevin: How do you
fund your start-up business in the early years without generating revenue from
services and mobile applications?

Kurt: We raised over $17 million. That affords us the opportunity to invest in
the technology without losing focus by delivering services and enduser
solutions.

Kevin: How do you
keep your users loyal to your technology?

Kurt: We provide them
with a platform and SDK that supports the latest modern devices. We provide them with great productivity tools
that enable the same code base to be used across multiple devices and mobile
operating systems. We offer trial
versions for 60 days.

Kevin: Where do you
see mobility going in the next 18-24 months?

Kurt: Enterprises are going to need to support a larger
number of mobile devices and mobile operating systems. They will need to support iPads, tablets of
all kinds, Android and many more mobile apps.
Internally, companies will be launching large numbers of their own
mobile applications that were developed in-house.

Kevin: Who do you compete with?

Kurt: In-house
development teams, Sybase and Antenna.

Kevin: In conclusion,
where does your company fit in the enterprise mobility ecosystem?

Kurt: WorkLight is a
100 percent technology focused company.
We develop a horizontal MEAP.

It is fascinating to ponder Worklight's strategy. They decided to build a new and powerful MEAP, but not to provide services or sell mobile apps to end users. They chose to use their investment capital to focus exclusively on developing technology and developer support. That is a rare strategy. Sybase mostly followed that strategy with their embedded mobile database and synchronization business (iAnywhere and former Extended Systems) and was purchased by SAP, and now Worklight who followed a similar strategy will be acquired by IBM. What does this tell us? Perhaps ERP vendors don't want the burden of supporting a large MEAP or mobile app enduser base that does not fit their traditional customer profile. They would rather just acquire the technology stack? What do you think?

Most MEAP vendors depend on services and end user app sales to help cover expenses as they develop and mature their solutions and channels. Worklight refused to follow that path. It doesn't appear they had yet reached profitability, since it seems they took in another $4 million in investor funding in the past year, but they did accept IBM's offer as their exit strategy. They committed to focus on the technology, rather than indulge the temptation (and distraction) to grab short term end user sales.

End user mobile app sales are sexy. They get the press and show well, but ultimately I think the MEAPs themselves are the mobile market consolidation points. Not just the mobile middleware, but the IDEs. The integrated development environments that are used to design and develop the apps. Some mobility vendors like ClickSoftware and Syclo actually support several choices of mobile middleware under their IDEs. The customers often only see the IDE, but underneath the covers are middleware options. SAP and the Sybase Unwired Platform also offer numerous choices (SUP, NetWeaver Gateway, Sybase 365, etc.) for middleware in their architecture.

If all the large ERP companies are going to ultimately acquire their own MEAP solution, that means MEAP market fragmentation will be hardened along ERP lines. If that is the case, would mobility vendors that focus on mobile end user applications find it necessary to support all the major MEAPs if they want to sell into those markets? That would be expensive!!! If that is how the market evolves, then it seems cloud based ERP-to-mobile app integration hubs would be worth a consideration. Mobile app developers would simply connect to one cloud based integration hub that integrates with all the ERPs. Wow, this line of thinking reminds me of my early days working with EDI/B2B translators and EDI hubs.

It will be interesting to watch the choices companies will make that have a mix of different business solutions and ERPs across their IT landscape.
We have been working closely with Yahoo on a number of fronts and we’re pretty excited about the Yahoo YQL integration in Titanium we released in the 0.8 release. More stuff will be coming soon.
Here’s a video that Yahoo Developer Network (YDN) featured about Appcelerator and Yahoo on their blog. Enjoy.

iPad - What It Means For Developers

Today was a historic day in computing history. While the techno-geeks will argue for the next several months what this really means and what the Apple iPad is missing or why it’s only a large screen iPod Touch, I’m going to be focused on what I think this really means to some key industries and how Appcelerator can help. From my perspective, web developers are talking up and overwhelmingly are planning new application experiences for the new iPad. We surveyed just a small sample of our community of developers and found that over 90% of them plan on building an iPad application in the next 12 months.

Apple iPad in 3rd Place Behind iPhone and Android For Application Developers

Appcelerator, a platform which is used to develop Apple Tablet applications, on Tuesday, announced the findings of a new poll taken of application developers about their plans to build applications for the Apple Tablet.

Taken last week from a pool of 18,000 of Appcelerator's application developers, 554 developers weighed in with responses about their plans, interests and preferences around Apple's forthcoming Tablet.

Appcelerator also announced that its flagship cross-platform product, Appcelerator Titanium, would support the new Apple Tablet.

Titanium enables web developers to use industry-standard, open-source Web technologies such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS to quickly build rich, fully native applications that run on the iPhone, Android, Apple Tablet, PC, Macintosh, Linux platforms from a single code base.

Building Smartphone Apps

Smartphone apps are the most exciting trend in computing since the advent of web apps. How do you as a developer take advantage of this? More generally, how do you do that and get maximum reach for your app across the diversity of smartphones out there. If you’re writing a consumer app you can get away with just targeting the iPhone (albeit missing some market opportunity). If you’re writing a business app you need to be able to reach all the users in the enterprise. There just are no homogeneous mobile device environments in any place but the smallest mom and pop shops now.

Yesterday I gave a presentation about the future of mobile development at the Mobile 2.0 conference in Mountain View, California. It was the battle of the current emerging players in the space (if you could call it a “battle”) : Appcelerator, Rhomobile and Phonegap. Of course, all three of us have much different [...]
